Circling Forward 8-4-17: The One Where I Try To Explain The Lack Of Updates Lately

At the time of this writing, it’s been over a week since my last post. That doesn’t seem too bad, but it’s been even longer since I’ve posted consistently. No, I haven’t stopped writing or lost interest, but it has been harder to find the time to do it. I’m hoping to be able to explain exactly what’s going on, as well as talk a little about what I’ve been playing lately. So, let’s get to it.

When I first started this blog, I decided that I wanted to do weekly posts that would keep the content coming in while I thought up the next subject to write about or played games I wanted to review. This started with Xenoblade Chronicles X Check-In, which was great. It gave me consistent content and forced me to stick with a long game all the way until the end, something I often struggle with. Later, I did the Reviewing E3 series, where I looked at 2015’s press conferences in the lead up to E3 2016. These were much less successful for me, but it was fun anyway. And then of course, Random Game Wednesdays.

Random Game Wednesdays ain’t going anywhere

I chose Wednesdays to write a post each week because I typically have off of work every Wednesday. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been true lately. Wednesdays are also a day that I have family obligations, so usually, I would write Wednesday mornings, before having to do my other stuff. Well, when I work in the morning, that makes that kind of difficult. Not impossible though, so I’m going to try harder to squeeze it in, without hurting the quality of the posts. Maybe I’ll write them in advance and just post them on Wednesday. I don’t know, I’ll figure it out.

There’s a very obvious post that I should have written a while back that I’m sure regular readers of the blog have noticed hasn’t popped up yet. That’s, of course, the conclusion of my most recent Check-In series, Dragon Age: Origins. I actually beat that game in time to get that post up when it was supposed to go up. I’ve even had a draft with the title of the post and a single sentence saved since that time. I just found myself not knowing how to write it, and then so much other stuff has come up, both for the blog and in real life, that I just haven’t gotten to it.

Why’s it always this Dragon Age screenshot?

Don’t worry though, it is still coming, and I’m planning on it being up very soon. Now I’m trying to decide how to write it. Do you remember Week 5, the one where none of the content was fresh in my mind, so it was all kind of garbled together? That’s kind of where I’m at now. Funny thing is, that’s actually my favorite episode of this series. It’s funny, but it still got the point across. So, I’m thinking I might do that again for the finale, because again, it’s been a long time. But I’m not sure that a post of that tone is appropriate for the final episode. Once again, I’ll figure it out, and it’ll be up in the near future.

The other thing that’s blocking more frequent posts is that I’m not sure that I want to continue doing First Impressions pieces. The only reason I write those is so that I can get something up about a game while it’s new and the thing people are talking about. I don’t make any money off of this blog and I don’t get early review copies or anything like that, so if I want to put up a piece about an exciting new game near launch, it almost has to be based off of the first few hours of the game.

That being said, a lot of the time, I don’t think that’s very fair to the game or the reader. Yeah, maybe they’ll see that I really enjoyed the first few hours of Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, but they don’t know if I’ll burn out on it long before I get to the end, and that’s kind of important for longer games. For the record, I still really like that game and you should probably pick it up.

And that leads me to the games that I’m currently playing, ones that probably would have gotten a First Impressions piece, but I decided to hold off for a full review. I’m really enjoying Splatoon 2 right now, but it’s not without its faults. Some of those are actually resulting in me not getting to my review. For example, I have yet to play any of Salmon Run, which most reviews say is a vital new piece to the Splatoon franchise. But with it being locked away on a schedule, and with me not always having the most amount of time to play games, it’s making it hard to see everything before I write the review. I’m hoping to have it up by the end of this weekend, though.

I like Hey! Pikmin

I’m also playing Hey! Pikmin. I’m a huge fan of the previous Pikmin games, and although this one is nothing like it, it still holds a lot of the same charm. To be fair though, I’m usually cool with franchises going in crazy new directions. I’m the guy who loved Star Fox Adventures. I’m the guy who loved Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts And Bolts. I’m the guy who didn’t hate Metroid Prime: Federation Force. So, it shouldn’t be too big a surprise that I’m enjoying Hey! Pikmin.

The other review I’m considering doing is one for The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. I’m just not sure if we really need another review on the internet of someone shouting the games praises. I obviously love it, and I’m sure you’ve read a million reviews from other people who love it. On the other hand, I with it being so late, it’s no longer the hot new thing. Maybe with that in mind, I can look a little more closely and find something unique to talk about. I’m definitely thinking about it.

And that’s about all I have to say today! Thanks for sticking with me. If you have any suggestions about what you’d like to see moving forward, let me know in the comments. Otherwise, I hope you’ll enjoy what I come up with next.
